Best Natural Bruising Creme

Take a look at this dramatic result just after 3 days of using our vitamin K and Arnica bruising creme! SAIAN® Vital K Creme is the most-effective paraben-free topical creme which works wonders on postoperative bruising following cosmetic surgery or injections, micro-needling, rosacea, dark circles, and hyperpigmentation.

Bruising and dark spots are the appearance of blood which has been released from the tiny capillaries of the battered area into the tissue under the skin. Over time the color eventually fades as the blood is absorbed back into the body and away from the surface.

To halt the expansion and deepening of unsightly discoloration, we use Phytonadione (Vitamin K). This is the body's natural blood coagulating agent which stops the spread of blood from seeping further. Individuals with low levels of Vitamin K will often experience wider and darker bruises, taking excessively long periods of time to recover because is not enough Vitamin K in their systems to prevent this from occurring. Not only is this creme perfect for post-surgical and injection-site bruising, but also ideal for micro-needling, cuperose, rosacea, and dark under-eye circles. http://saian.net/product/vital-k-creme/

Determine your Skin Type and Choose the Best Daily Routine!

Our skin is in its most natural state upon waking in the morning. Take a look at your skin when you first wake up. If you see oils only on the tip of the nose, but overall dryness, then you have dry skin. Oils on the T-zone usually signify normal skin, oils all over the face, accompanied by blemishes often signify acneic skin.

Each client’s skin has unique needs, so selecting the right products is very important. There are many types of cleansers available on the market, and there is no one perfect product for all. Typically, older clients have dry skin and prefer milky cleansers because they don’t strip the skin of natural oils, and moisturize as they clean. Younger clients may prefer a foamy cleanser, which makes the face feel “squeaky clean” and tight. Different cleansers are made with ingredients added specifically to treat certain skin types. For example, aloe and chamomile are added to soothe sensitive skin, salicylic and AHA to treat oily, and acne-prone skin.
http://saian.net/product-category/categories/cleansers/
Applying serum is essential if you want to target wrinkles, and deliver active ingredients deep into the skin. Serums have small water-based molecules that penetrate the skin, and go to work reducing fine lines, and crow's feet. For everyone over 30, select a serum with peptides if you are worried about wrinkles, a serum with alpha arbutin if you are trying to get rid of hyper pigmentation, and a serum with collagen boosting Trilogen, if you want to plump and firm inelastic skin.
http://saian.net/product-category/categories/moisturizers/
Applying moisturizer is essential after serum application. This step ensures that the serum doesn't evaporate, and provides a double layer of anti-aging peptides. Choose a light moisturizer to allow the skin to breathe, such as a hyaluronic peptide crème, or an antioxidant leave-on mask at night.

The most important step in the evening is washing the face thoroughly! My nighttime regimen is very simple - it doesn’t matter how tired I am at the end of the day, I always wash off my make-up, apply my hyaluronic acid/peptide serum (I use SAIAN Active renewal serum) to the face and neck, and tie back my hair to avoid breakouts caused by hair product residue touching the sides of the face.

Lash Conditioners 101

How do lash conditioners work and what are the benefits of using lash conditioning products?
Lash conditioners are usually applied to the base of the eyelashes at night, and contain a molecule which prolongs the hair growth cycle, and extends the life of essential cells, so that your lashes don’t fall out as often. These products also strengthen lashes by moisturizing them with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid. An added benefit is, unlike with using eyelash extensions applied with glue, conditioners don’t cause damage, and can be used in conjunction with mascara and eyeliner.
What are typical ingredients used in these products and how do they encourage lash growth and benefit the lashes?  Typical ingredients for these types of products are peptides, hyaluronic acid, and stem cells. These ingredients prolong the hair growth cycle, and extend the life of essential cells, so that your lashes don’t fall out as often.

What ingredients are important to look for in an effective lash conditioner?
Peptides, hyaluronic acid, and stem cells are wonderful ingredients in lash conditioners. Look for conditioners without prostaglandin, as this ingredient has been known to cause the pupils of the eyes to turn a darker color.

Are there any hygiene issues associated with using a lash conditioner?
As with any make-up, it is discouraged to share this product with others, only use the lash conditioner for yourself. Sharing eye care products can lead to transferable eye infections such as pink eye.

SAIAN Acne Treatment Protocol

Become a superstar at treating acne by following this easy step-by-step treatment protocol:

1.Before starting the treatment, prepare a pair of gloves, and 2 bowls of water - one warm, and one cool. Cleanse the face with SAIAN Active Cleanser. This foamy cleansing gel contains 10% Alpha Hydroxy Acid to kill germs and bacteria, seaweed extracts to nourish and strengthen capillary walls, and rosehip seed extract. Remove the cleanser with warm water thoroughly.

2. Saturate glycolic applicator swabs with SAIAN Salicylic Acid 2%, and gently buff the face upward from both sides until the client feels a light tingling. For your first time client, keep the Salicylic acid on the face for a maximum of 2 minutes. You may later increase the time as your client's tolerance increases. Remove SAIAN Salicylic acid with cool water after 1-2 minutes.

3. Mix a ½ teaspoon of SAIAN Enzyme Mask with warm water to make a soft paste. Apply SAIAN Enzyme Mask to the whole face for 10 minutes. Turn on the steam and the ozone, and point to the client's face, so the mask stays moist, and the enzymes are active. If you don't have a steamer, use a moist hot towel over the Enzyme mask to keep it from drying up. This mask is based on bentonite clay, oats, and pineapple enzymes, which exfoliate and cleanse out the pores. SAIAN Enzyme Mask is perfect before extractions. Remove SAIAN Enzyme Mask with warm water.

4. Perform Manual extraction. Change tissues often to prevent the spread of bacteria.

5. Use your SAIAN portable high-frequency machine over the blemished areas for 3-5 minutes. Before use don't forget to ask your client if she is pregnant or has a pacemaker. Our portable machine has 4 attachments and is great for a mobile spa business.
6. Apply a thin layer of SAIAN Active Rx Mask to overly oily and blemished areas for 15 minutes. SAIAN Active Rx Mask is based on bentonite clay, sulfur, camphor, magnesium, hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid, and oxygen plasma. Wash off the Active Rx Mask with warm water.

7. Spray with SAIAN Herbal toner. It doesn't contain any alcohol or oil, and is a beautiful bouquet of herb extracts based on witch hazel and aloe.

8. Apply SAIAN Acne Spot Treatment. Don't shake the bottle, so that the sediment stays on the bottom and the liquid is on the top. Dip a q-tip to the bottom of Acne Spot Treatment, and apply only to blemishes. It contains minerals such as magnesium and iron which kill germs and bacteria without leaving discoloration. When finished, close the container tightly and throw away the q-tip. Do not double dip with the same q-tip into the container.

9. Take out your SAIAN cryo Globes from the freezer and wipe them dry to remove excess moisture. Use the Cryo-Globes to massage the face upward to close the pores and minimize redness.

10. The final step is to spray the client's face with SAIAN sunscreen mist SPF 29. This water-based sunscreen is perfect for all skin types, and contains no oil, no alcohol and no chemicals.

September 2015 DAYSPA Magazine Features the Best Handheld Microcurrent

The latest, September 2015 issue of DAYSPA Magazine features an interview with a happy spa owner who uses SAIAN Natural Clinical Skin Care in her practice! Please see this wonderful excerpt from page 62:
http://saian.net/
Amy Lord of Beyond Beauty Spa in Austin, TX writes about SAIAN Skin Pro 2 System:

How it Works:
This travel-friendly galvanic/microcurrent machine provides a portable facial. When used with SAIAN peptide products, it firms and tones the face and neck, stimulates collagen production, and visibly reduces the signs of aging.

Why it’s my favorite:
“I went to a non-surgical facelift class four years ago in Dallas and was impressed by the noticeable results of lifting and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles achieved in just one treatment with this device”, Lord says. “The investment was affordable, so I thought I’d give it a try. It has been one of the best business decisions I’ve ever made, and has hugely increased my facial income and product sales!”
http://saian.net/
When Lord first brought the SAIAN Skin Pro 2 System into her spa and encouraged her facial clients to try it, she saw most of them switch from a typical European facial to one that employs the device. “My clients love the results from the hand-held machines, “ she says. “Once they tried the new facial, there was no going back.” The Skin Pro 2's size and portability are major pluses. “It’s easy to take with me to give quick treatments at a wedding party or other beauty event,” Lord notes. “At the spa, it doesn’t take up a lot of space in my treatment room like many other pieces of equipment. And it’s my biggest money maker, so in that respect, it really comes in handy!”

The Health and Skin Benefits of Ubiquinone

SAIAN Amino-Lift Leave-on Peptide Mask is based on Argireline, Hyaluronic Acid, Matrixyl-3000 and CoQ-10. CoQ-10 is a natural substance found in every cell of the human body, but in our mid twenties its activity decreases. Naturally occurring in the tissue of plants, CoQ-10 (also known as “ubiquinone”) is a vitamin-like anti-oxidant that boosts cellular activity. It helps to fortify the skin’s defenses against UV damage, while reducing the appearance of wrinkles, strengthening cell membranes, and providing the skin with new energy.

Home Care for Sensitive and Dry Skin

When it comes to home-care, before making any recommendations, I like to conduct a client consultation, to analyze my client's skin. For anyone with dry, and very dry skin, I always recommend to start with a moisturizing milky cleanser twice a day. This can be a cleanser based on Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Calendula, Sage, and Vitamin E. Choose a cleanser that doesn’t irritate the eyes, and also removes make-up well. By starting with a milky cleanser, you know that all steps in your daily routine are designed to hydrate. The face, neck and décolleté are exposed to the sun, wind and cold weather, and must be all cared for in the same way as the face during the professional treatment and at home. The delicate neck and décolleté area is often ignored when it comes to application of moisturizers and sunscreen, and is easily susceptible to dehydration and sun damage.

Most of us take very good care of our face, but often ignore the neck, décolleté and bust. Taking care of the neck and décolleté is no different than taking care of the face. To achieve a lifting effect, estheticians should start the cleansing and exfoliation routine upwards from the décolleté and continue to the face. At home, one should cleanse that whole area with cleanser daily, and exfoliate with scrub or enzyme mask once in three days. This is the only way to achieve an even transition in color and texture from the bust to the face. Décolleté products should not be too harsh, since the skin is thin in that area. It's also preferable to have fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products, to avoid any reaction. I dislike using mechanical equipment on the chest, or by the thyroid, to avoid stimulation of the lymphatic system.

When it comes to moisturizing the skin, a serum always comes first. Choose serums based on Hyaluronic Acid containing Peptides that reduce wrinkles and rejuvenate skin. As we all know, ingredients are listed on the label starting with the most prevalent to the least prevalent. It’s important to choose a product which is water-based, and has peptides in the beginning of the ingredient list – this way you can be assured of the amount of peptides in the formula. You may also consult the manufacturer, and ask what percentage of a given peptide is used. Usually, 10% of each peptide is sufficient to give great results, if there is a blend of 3 or 4 peptides in a formula.

Avoid peptide combinations that are mixed with hydroquinone, parabens, and other toxins that can irritate the skin, and don’t forget to nourish your skin with Vitamin C. Three of the most potent forms of Vitamin C available on the market today are Ascorbyl Glucoside, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate. This powerful antioxidant combination in a serum fights free radicals, stimulates collagen production, nourishes the skin, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and brightens skin tone while keeping stable. Remember, a true serum has a watery, oil-free formula that is easily absorbable by the skin. This type of product is ideal for application around the delicate skin if the eyes, and the nasolabial folds. Most serums tend to be ionizable, and can be penetrated with a galvanic machine while the client is getting a facial. This is a great way to get the best results from the active ingredients in the product! You don't need any big professional equipment - there are a number of hand-held units available on the market, that work as well as the large machine, and sometimes even better!

I also love collagen! Marine collagen is a form of collagen that derived from an assortment of sea algae species Laminaria and Padina. This marine collagen polypeptide is designed to stimulate type III Collagen deep down within the skin. Collagen is a large molecule that alone cannot penetrate into the skin - so scientists found that polypeptide technology can actually stimulate the synthesis marine collagen in the skin. This new technology allows the skin to open up and allow the collagen through, because the regular molecule is too large to get in. Combination of marine collagen with polypeptide technology, will help our skin by stimulating collagen production, and elastin collagen thickening, encouraging skin renewal and minimizing muscle contractions, reducing the appearance of deep wrinkles and fine lines, helping provide long-term improvements in deeper wrinkles, helping prevent collagen and elastin breakdown to firm the skin.
After applying a serum, it's best to apply a creme. The reason for this is that a creme creates a barrier that helps keep the serum from evaporating. Since serums don't have oil, they penetrate quickly, but don't feel like they are moisturizing enough. Most of the time, serums leave a tight feeling on the skin. After application of creme, the skin will feel softer, more shiny and moisturized. This is especially beneficial during the wintertime, since most of us feel dry and chapped. For cremes, I recommend looking for a hyaluronic acid base with Peptides, Apricot Kernel Oil, Squalene (from olives, not shark liver), and Jojoba Oil. There are also some great new ingredients specifically designed for the wind and cold, such as Antarcticine. This ingredient helps the skin retain water, preventing cutaneous dryness, stimulates fibroblast adhesion and keratinocyte growth, regenerating tissues and enabling a faster healing of wounds, and increases collagen type I and IV, as well as elastin, resulting in a restructured skin and a reduction in wrinkles. This active ingredient also reduces the depth of wrinkles, especially on the forehead and around the eyes.

To complete the daily skincare regimen, use sunscreen daily, regardless of season, since the sun shines on us every day of the year. I recommend a sunscreen which is non-comedogenic, and non-toxic. Remember to choose a sunscreen with physical blocks like Zinc and Titanium dioxide, as opposed to chemicals which will enter the bloodstream and cause long-term damage in the long run.

Hyperpigmentation - How Can I Remove Dark Spots on the Face and Body?

Removing dark spots on the face and body is extremely challenging, so I don’t like to use the term “remove”, but substitute it for “treat” or “diminish”. Hyperpigmentation is not an easy issue to treat, and it may take years to accumulate, so there is no easy fix for this issue. The best time to start a hyperpigmentation treatment is always in the fall or winter, because you need to avoid the sun when performing peels or deep exfoliation. Knowledgeable and experienced skin care professionals don’t like using the ingredient hydroquinone, because it is highly habit-forming, and the hyperpigmentation comes back after the patient stops using the products. The safest bet is using products based on kojic acid, tyrostat, andalpha-arbutin over a 28-day cycle. Usually even the most stubborn melasma and sun spots fade after this intensive course.

10 Facts About Acne

  1. Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States - it affects nearly 50 million Americans.
  2. Some of the most common causes of acne are: genetics, stress, hormones, medication, oil-based cosmetics, environmental pollution, acidity and candida, intestinal infection, and allergies.
  3. 85% of all Americans have had acne at one point in their lives.
  4. The most common age group that is affected by acne is 15-25 year-olds.
  5. Active teenagers who play sports are likely to get blemishes from not washing their face after exercising, and from wearing the same helmet/baseball cap daily.
  6. Acne treatment products containing Salicylic Acid, and Glycolic Acid are not recommended for use during the daytime, and should only be applied before bed, as to avoid skin hyperpigmentation.
  7. At-home extractions are highly discouraged, because they produce permanent scarring. Acne scars are commonly categorized in three groups: Atrophic: shallow for the most part; Boxcar-shaped: scars are those which tend to be larger; Ice pick-shaped: scars are those which are both deep and narrow in appearance.
  8. Every study conducted on the psychological impact of acne has shown that it causes a statistically significant increase in anxiety, depression and related mental health problems.
  9. Acne may be caused by a deficiency in Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin A, Selenium, Vitamin E, and Omega 3.
  10. Acne thrives on sugar and yeast, so the best way to keep those blemishes at bay is by avoiding sweets, dairy and bread.

Choosing The Right Serum For Your Skin Type

As skin care professionals, we all know what a dramatic difference using an amazing serum can make. It can take years off our client’s appearance, reduce fatigue, tighten the pores, minimize rosacea, soothe dryness, reduce hyperpigmentation and diminish wrinkles!

What is so special about serums? The wonderful thing is that they pack a powerful punch of concentrated active ingredients! A serum's molecule is usually very small, and delivers the ingredients to all skin layers without clogging the pores with any oil, glycerin, or other comedogenic fillers. A product like this is usually gel-like, and water-based, so it absorbs instantly, and doesn’t sit on the surface of the skin. The benefit of this gel-like oil-free consistency, is that (unlike some cremes) a serum can be used very closely around the eyes without causing the development of milia and irritation. While younger clients like the tight feeling of an oil-free product, such as a serum, older clients may feel like their skin is too dry, and choose to apply creme over the serum, to replenish. This is a great way to provide a barrier that keeps the serum from evaporating, as well as provide a double layer of active ingredients (such as peptides and hyaluronic acid).

In recent years, there has been a plethora of advances in product formulation, the best being the elimination of parabens and chemicals from many product lines. Natural preservatives such as citric acid, ethylhexylglycerin and phenoxyethanol efficiently provide a two year shelf life for most serums, and don’t have any toxic side effects that are associated with parabens and similar chemical preservatives. The best base for serums is water, and to get that silky smooth gel feeling, the best, and most potent moisturizing ingredient on the market is Hyaluronic Acid. Did you know that the loss of skin elasticity that comes with aging, is often the result of decreasing Hyaluronic Acid (HA) levels? HA is the best topical hydrating agent and a potent anti-inflammatory that stops itching and burning, is very soothing, and results in smoother skin. The best type of Hyaluronic Acid is a vegan low molecular weight HA. This is not harvested from a rooster comb, or chicken cartilage, but is plant-based, and manipulated in a lab for a perfect, hypoallergenic product! This ingredient is the same type of gel that is used in dermal fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®, and is completely safe.

Now that we know the best base for a serum, let’s talk a little about the best active ingredients that we can add to the blend! Since we want to reduce wrinkles, and give the face a more youthful appearance, peptides are a great choice. Peptides are small fragments of proteins, and proteins are the key building blocks of most living tissues. Certain kinds of peptides have an avid affinity for copper, to which they bind very tightly. The resulting compound consisting of a peptide and a copper atom has become known as a copper peptide. A distinctive feature of GHK copper peptides is that they reduce scar tissue formation while stimulating normal skin remodeling. In other words, they help better restore the damaged area to its original look.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 (Argireline®) improves wrinkle depth, wrinkle volume and roughness. This peptide can significantly modulate muscle contraction, thereby destabilizing the cell so it cannot release the neurotransmitters that make the muscle contract thus preventing formation of lines and wrinkles. Argireline® reduces pre-existing wrinkle depth and relaxes facial tension. Matrixyl-3000® minimizes crow’s feet and laugh lines, and prevents from further damage and wrinkle formation. Trylogen® boosts synthesis of Collagen I, III, and IV, uniforms fibril diameter and spacing, and inhibits enzymatic breakdown, avoiding excessive collagen damage.

I also see many serums made with powerful brighteners and antioxidants, such as Vitamin C.

Some wonderful brightening ingredients have emerged recently, as alternatives to the toxic Hydroquinone, which is steadily losing popularity on the market during the past 5 years. Three of the most potent non-toxic whitening agents available on the market today are Tyrostat™ (derived from Rumex Occidentalis Extract), Nonapeptide-1 (Melanostatine®5) , and α Arbutin, which address the affects of discoloration and hyperpigmentation on the skin. These amazing new natural ingredients prevent hyperproduction of melanin and further activation of tyrosinase, thus blocking melanin synthesis for better control over skin tone and brown spots. When used daily, a serum with α Arbutin promotes brightening on all skin types, minimizes the appearance of liver spots and age spots, can reduce the degree of skin tanning after UV exposure.

It’s always best to apply serums after cleansing the skin, and before the application of moisturizers. This is typically the last step in a facial, and I recommend to use your galvanic machine to increase the serum’s penetration, since most are ionizable. A treatment like this, with the right product, is guaranteed to wow your client, and provide her with a healthy lift and glow!

Microcurrent FAQ- Everything You Wanted To Know

A couple of weeks ago, I shared some valuable information about microcurrent devices, and their use in professional aesthetics. Today, I'd like to expand upon this topic, and thoroughly explain the best modes of marketing and promoting your new Non-Surgical Face-Lift treatment!

As you know, we are living in a day and age where everyone seeks instant gratification, and this amazing facial procedure is sure to give your clients the immediate and cumulative results they are looking for!

MICROCURRENT FAQ:

-What's some of the most effective language a spa pro could use to summarize your machine's complex, high-tech offerings on a spa service menu (or any other printed collateral)?
Clients want to know the end result of this treatment, so calling this a microcurrent non-surgical face-lift is the most effective way to put it on the menu! Your clientele will be excited to read that this treatment tightens the skin, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, tones and firms the muscles, and gives the face a younger, more lifted appearance!

-What are some effective ways a spa owner could market these offerings?
The best, and most convincing way to market a microcurrent treatment, is with before and after images of the clients who have had it. The results speak for themselves!

-Who should the target client be?
The ideal client for a microcurrent procedure is anyone over the age of 21, who may be concerned with wrinkles, loss of skin tone, muscle tone and elasticity, as well as clients complaining of an overall droopy appearance - sagging jowls, flat cheekbones, and pronounced nasolabial folds.

-Since serial treatment is often advised, do you have any tips for getting clients to re-book services?
A series of 6 treatments, spaced about 2-3 weeks apart is ideal. The best way to promote this package, is by giving a discount when the client pays upfront. You may also consider counting the 6th treatment as complimentary, when 5 are purchased upfront at regular price.

-Any other tips spa pros could use to get the word out about your device?
Since this microcurrent non-surgical face-lift is ideal before special events, it is a great idea to network with make-up artists, to coordinate providing services before weddings, parties, and photo-shoots. Another great way to promote the service is to place your flyers at photo-studios, hair salons, and at bridal shops.

-What are the best ways to educate spa pros on how to perform services using your device?

The best way to master this treatment is by taking a workshop class from the device manufacturer. Many companies offer free classes at trade-shows, as well as group demos at their headquarters. Personally, I am an avid advocate of trying everything on myself, before putting it on the spa menu for my clientele. This way you will be familiar with the sensation of the machine, and experience its benefits first hand!
